There are a number of cosmetic dental techniques your dentist at Alabama Family Dental can use to improve your smile, including: whitening and brightening, reshaping, increasing length, eradicating gaps, veneers and restoration of worn teeth. The desired effects and condition of your teeth may dictate the type of procedure to enhance your smile.
Do you want to lighten your teeth simply to project a brighter smile? Does discoloration or staining make you self-conscious? Tooth whitening, is a popular chemical practice that offers noticeable results in less than an hour. Results are not permanent, but can last for a year or more, depending on personal habits. Available to you at Alabama Family Dentists are in-office or home tooth whitening procedures that correct discoloration of the tooth. We offer Zoom! Whitening system at all of our Alabama Family Dentistry locations. This in-office bleaching system uses a laser to activate crystals in a translucent lightening gel applied to the teeth. Energy from the light is absorbed, allowing the bleaching agents to penetrate the tooth enamel. After being fitted for a mouth brace to comfortably hold your mouth open, and a protectant applied to your lips and gums, the gel and light are activated in three 15 minute increments. Your new smile is visible within one hour. Also offered is an at-home whitening kit with customized fitted upper and lower mouth trays and whitening gel. Your home whitening regimen lasts for two to four weeks of daily sessions depending on the shade you desire. Our offices provide the kits and instructions, prepare the customized trays, and include the follow up visits.
If your teeth are misshapen, chipped, discolored and your desire is a beautiful, perfect white, then dental veneers may be the right choice for you. Veneers are a thin covering that are designed to place over the front (visible) part of your tooth.
Do you have some minor imperfections in your smile? If you have chipped, cracked, overlapping, or crooked teeth, Alabama Family Dentists offers dental contouring, a procedure which minimizes imperfections, resulting in an immediate, yet subtle, improvement to your smile. The technique removes small amounts of tooth enamel using a sanding drill or laser to modify the shape, length, or surface the teeth. Abrasive strips shape the sides of the teeth. The final step is application of a few millimeters of tooth colored laminate, then smoothing and polishing the teeth.
Bonding is a popular choice to improve the appearance of your smile, lasting 7 to 11 years with proper maintenance. Tooth-colored composite resin is used to restore chipped or cracked teeth, close gaps and change the shape or color of a tooth’s surface. It can even be used as a filling for small cavities where visibility is important. After a mild etching solution is applied to the teeth to ensure bonding, an enamel-like composite material is applied to a tooth’s surface, sculpted into shape, a high-intensity light cures the plastic, and the surface is finely polished. Depending on your particular case, bonding takes one to two hours.
